Genevieve Martel
Toronto

Geneviève Martel is based in Toronto, but is from Québec, and also lived in and travels frequently to New York City. She has forever been involved in performance via her own dance or theatre appearances. She also keeps busy as a freelance production coordinator and executive producer for productions in advertising photography, film and staged or site specific performances.
Her most influencial dance studies were with Ohad Naharin, Margie Gillis, Tere O’Connor, Merce Cunningham, Zvi Gotheiner, Robert Desrosiers, the Iceland Dance Company, and members of the William Forsythe company. She has also studied and worked with members of Philip Seymour Hoffmans’ LAByrinth Theatre Company in New York City where she wrote, acted, produced and directed.
Her projects have lead her to New Zealand, Iceland, Peru, France, Spain and New York City.
This summer she was rehearsal and director assistant for a film featuring Margie Gillis with award winner director Ayelen Liberona. And for over one year now, she has been John Oswald’s production manager, who’s latest project is Art and Drinks, a unique art bar in Toronto, where visitors can view time-based video art by nine artists, four who are Governor General Laureates.
Geneviève is also interested in building a community. She has done so most recently by running a weekly gathering of dancers to provide and space, time and support for dancers to work, improvise and explore. In addition, she with three other writers, have just founded a writing collective.
Last but not least, Geneviève is also an avid contact improviser.
