FLUID FESTIVAL 2011

Welcome to the sixth annual Fluid Arts Festival. Bigger and better than ever — for your viewing pleasure.

I’m a forager. I seek out wild things – berries, mushrooms, bull kelp, choreographers and performers. Nothing makes me happier than searching without knowing what I will find, to be surprised by the beauty and the possibility. I invite you to be part of my exploration. Search through this program. Seek out the beauty, oddity, and possibility of the outstanding physical artists who have congregated at the Fluid Festival from around the world to perform for us, to startle us and confront us by their reflections on contemporary life.

Savour the experience. Explore our world in flux through different geographic and cultural prisms to discover new models of physical performance that are altering the dynamics of artistic creation. Right here, right now – in Calgary at the Fluid Festival.

This year we have an added element to our festival, Fluent — a Fluid Conversation. A national gathering of creative thinkers will convene at the EPCOR Centre for the Arts. Canada’s dance community in open and creative conversation, which highlights Alberta artists and prairie creators and links national and provincial communities. Most events are free and open to the public. Join.

We couldn’t do it without our supporters. I’m so pleased to announce that Poynt has joined the Fluid Festival as a new and important sponsor. We thank this innovative technology company for their support of innovation in the arts.

And I acknowledge our returning partner – First Calgary Financial. With First Calgary Financial we present local talent from emerging to established artists. They speak of our unique place and state of mind here in Calgary. I am thrilled with Calgary’s response to the festival. Our audience has been enthusiastic in its endorsement of our event. If you are new to our festival welcome! Let us know what gems you discover. And for those of you returning, let’s keep celebrating outstanding physical performance in all its permutations.

I am delighted that you have joined us for another year of outstanding physical contemporary performance. Thank you.
